What to Do When You Miss Someone From Your Past

Missing someone from your past can bring back strong memories. Here are thoughtful ways to preserve those memories and explore a respectful reconnection.

Sometimes a person from your past comes back to mind unexpectedly. It might be an old friend, classmate, college friend, neighbor, colleague, or someone you met during an important period of your life.

If you miss someone, start by identifying what you remember rather than immediately trying to find private contact information. Think about where you met, the years you knew each other, the city, school, workplace, mutual friends, and moments that made the connection memorable.

You can write down the story for yourself first. This often helps separate what you know from what you only vaguely remember. If you decide to search, use only information that is appropriate to share publicly.

A WeMetOnce Lost Connection post can be one respectful way to put a memory into words. Describe the connection and the clues that may help the person recognize it. You do not need to publish sensitive information to make a meaningful post.

Reconnecting is not guaranteed, and another person may not want contact. Respect that possibility. The purpose of a lost-connection post is to create an opportunity for recognition, not to pressure someone into responding.

Sometimes simply giving an old memory a place to exist is meaningful. And sometimes the person you remember is looking for the same connection.
